Choosing the right product and technology for individual reservoirs and applying it at the right time is extremely important in maximizing oil recovery. ZL was established in 1995, with strong focus in polyacrylamide R&D and manufacturing for enhanced oil recovery industry.  We use our expertise and on-site experiences to help our customers evaluate the reservoir characteristics to design the most cost effective program. Our lab work, pilot testing and application methodology will help bring success to full field implementation.


The complexity of the geology and other characteristics of oil reservoirs (such as temperature, salinity and hardness of the water in the reservoir) mean that different Polymer products are required for different reservoirs. It is important to choose the suitable product to ensure technical success while minimizing the cost of the chemicals and operation costs to ensure both technical and economical success. Each of polymers’ chemical property is linked to economic and technical success of a polymer flooding projects. For example, polymer’s ability to dissolve under target injection water directly linked to the facility design and the injectivity of polymers over time; polymer’s ability to maintain high viscosity in situ over time tells the real mobility ratio you will gain throughout the reservoir; polymer bulk viscosity, shear resistance, adsorption, structures, hydrolysis degree etc are all the parameters we look at and work with our customers to understand the chemistry and to ensure a successful polymer flooding project.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT POLYMER

LOW SALINITY AND TEMPERATURE RESERVOIRS

ZLPAM® Type I category offers cost competitive products that are suitable for this type of reservoir.

Low salinity and temperature reservoirs especially with good permeability ranges are suitable for polymer flooding. Regular HPAM can meet the requirement for chemical compatibility with the injection water and formation conditions. Products are suitable for this type of reservoirs includes the following:
1) Linear structure;
2) High viscosity under target injection and formation brine;
3) Good dissolution under target injection brine;
4) Low/no adsorption;

 

HIGH SALINITY AND TEMPERATURE RESERVOIRS

ZLPAM® Type II and Type III category offers technical competent products to minimize chemical costs that are suitable for this type of reservoir.

High salinity reservoirs pose challenges for polymers to maintain its linear chain overtime, thus to maintain its viscosity and ability to propagate in the reservoir. High salinity also takes longer for regular HPAM to reach full dissolution state thus increase the facility investment and higher chance of experiencing injectivity issue over time. High temperature reservoirs pose challenges for polymer stability in situ over time, it accelerates the chemical reaction between polymers and divalent or multi-valent ions in the formation water, it also hydrolyzes polymers in situ which will change its viscosity behaviors with different hydrolysis degrees.
 

Polymers need to be carefully selected for this type of reservoir to ensure technical success of a polymer flooding project. Products are suitable for this type of reservoirs include the following:
1) Linear structure;
2) High viscosity under target formation brine and temperature conditions;
3) Good long term stability over time;
4) Good dissolution under target injection brine;
5) Low/no adsorption;
6) Other factors to consider: low surface viscosity and increase viscosity insitu over time;
7) Polymer propagation in the reservoir to ensure good sweep efficiency;
8) Minimize polymer emulsion breaking issues;

SP AND ASP FLOODING

Compatibility with surfactant and alkaline is critical for the polymer selected

Polymers for SP and ASP flooding need to consider compatibility with surfactant and alkaline, ZL offers suitable polymers for SP flooding and ASP flooding.

OFFSHORE POLYMER FLOODING

Fast dissolution salinity resistant polymer. ZLPAM IV and V category product is suitable for offshore polymer flooding applications.

Offshore oil fields are deemed to be more challenging to apply EOR technology compared to onshore oil fields. Due to its limitation on platform spaces, weight and operation, a successful EOR method might not be applicable to offshore fields. Polymer flooding has a huge potential for offshore water flooded fields when the existing challenges are overcoming.


Challenges faced by offshore polymer flooding:
1) Real estate and weight Limitation
2) Limited water sources and waste water treatment facilities
3) Large well spacing


ZL's Microblock Ter-polymer enables dry polymer to be fully dissolved in sea water or higher saline injection water within very short period of time,to eliminate mixing and maturation tanks on the platform: 
1) Fast dissolution dry polymer technology incorporated with micro block template terpolymer, enables full dissolution of polymer in pipeline without mixing and maturation tanks.
2) High salinity and temperature resistance characteristics, use sea water or produced water for polymer preparation and injection, stable polymer causes less produced water emulsion breaking issues.
3) Good long term stability in situ, provides better sweep efficiency thus higher oil recovery.
